Invest Your Love
/Lately I've been feeling like I'm spreading myself too thin. I want to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way and I know a lot of you feel the same way. Our generation is one that is faced with the challenge of juggling like no one has ever juggled before in order to stand out. When you choose the path of entrepreneurship, you choose the road less traveled by... and then some.
At first, I didn't want to say it out loud; I felt like it was a bad thing to admit to myself. But, when I finally did, I realized that other entrepreneurs I admire felt the same way. It was comforting to know that you don't have to be able to do it all at once.
Of course it is important to multitask and to take on multiple projects... it's really the only way to be successful these days. Most of us have 9-5 jobs we are dedicated to and passionate about... on top of building our own brands. We work to balance our 9-5 lives with our entrepreneurial lives. We don't want to say no to opportunities and we push ourselves to the limit. We often sacrifice our personal lives, and sometimes our well-being, to try to do everything and it can break us down quickly.
I recently suffered an injury to my foot that has literally kept me off my feet for months. But, instead of realizing I was hurt and needed time, I tried to keep going at the same pace. It wasn't until recently that I realized it's time for me to re-prioritize the direction of my career, my goals, and my life. It's time to start figuring out what I want to be when I grow up.
As twenty-somethings we panic and we feel like we have something to prove because we do. The competition out there is insane. There are so many talented, creative, driven people just in our age bracket alone. The economy is scary and I don't think anyone prepared us well enough for what we're dealing with. But, what we have to remember is that doing ten projects at 87% at 3 am is not going to get us anywhere. We won't be putting our best work out into the world.
So choose wisely and work hard. After all, this is the time in our lives when we can put work first and go after what we want. But, we also need to make sure that our careers are built on quality, not quantity. It's also imperative that we pay attention to the people we love and show them that we care... even when we're busy.
We want to be everywhere and do everything, but we have to do it well. If we can't, we need to "trim the fat" and give our time and talents to what we know will take us to the next level. We have to breathe, re-align, and have faith in our decisions.
After all, "where you invest your love, you invest your life." Good luck out there, kids.
